Art: Steamroller Printing Festival by Kate Walker

Kate: A few days ago I participated in the Steamroller Printing Festival at San Francisco's Center for the Book. Alongside 29 other artists, I carved a piece of linoleum which was then used to make prints with a steamroller. These prints were sold as a fundraiser for the Center.

It's great fun to take on small, side projects, and to be involved in local art groups. This was also my very first time seeing a steamroller in process--they're kinda crazy and awesome!

Leigh Lake by Chris Walker

I promised Kate a trip to Leigh lake up in the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness. It's quite large for a mountain lake and the view of Snowshoe Peak (~8750') to the west never disappoints.

Art: Ambrose sneak-peek to finished product by Kate Walker

March 2, Kate: Hello there! I recently accepted a commission from Ambrose, a classical education school in Meridian, Idaho. On behalf of the faculty and staff, I'll be making a book for Ambrose students to sign as part of their graduation ceremonies each year.

Ambrose has a beautiful seal and crest (pictured below), which I will be incorporating into my designs.

More details and pictures coming soon!

May 30: Hello again! I completed the Ambrose book last week. Below are pictures that Christopher and I took of the process and finished product.

Art: Digital Portraits by Kate Walker

Kate: Here are a few portraits I snapped of my nephews, 2013-2014.

Idaho Winter by Chris Walker

Chris: we hit fun lighting conditions on a recent trip from Moscow to Boise and back. I had half a roll of the Kauai film left to shoot.

Kauai: Film photos by Chris Walker

Chris: We just got the photos from our honeymoon developed and scanned.

Film has this incredible tactile quality. These little strips of plastic were there with us on the journey. This is no digital representation that can only be mediated by a computer: it's the thing itself. (Or ... it would be if you were looking at the originals.)

Fuji Velvia ISO 100 slide film, 50 mm f/1.4 Nikon lens, 35mm Nikkormat camera. Developed and scanned by NCPS in California.

Art: Cyanotypes by Kate Walker

Kate: Here are a few pictures of a cyanotype series I made about two years ago. The idea was to explore the unique shapes, sizes, and details of leaves through varying compositions. I loved highlighting some of the delicate detail in each print with silver leaf. In more than one way, metal leafing is, I believe, a very apropos medium for reflecting the delightfully small and intricate beauty of a leaf.

I have another cyanotype series in the works, and will write a post for it soon!
